We’ve just about reached full-on summer heat here, and I’m loving it. This Sunday was a scorcher—the perfect day to sit on a shaded patio and drink lemonade. And that’s exactly what I did at Cafe In Planet. It’s in Hongdae on the same sidestreet as Tora_B and a few adorable little makgeoli/cocktail bars. I’ve passed it several times without realizing how nice it was, and I’m glad that I finally stopped in.
The name “Cafe In Planet” is a little deceiving, since there is a distinct lack of galactic decor (a planet on the logo, a few astronaut figurines here and there). The real theme of the cafe seems to be plants! Tiny cups, jars, and vases full of sprouts are everywhere in this place. Each table has a little recycled container (an old make-up tub? good idea!) with flowers or herbs growing out of it, and with every iced drink order, a small plant comes on the tray (everyone gets a different plant!). By the cash register is a small nursery of tiny plants in tiny vases. I know it’s a gimmick, and I know it doesn’t really have much of a purpose, but I really love having the little sprout with my lemonade. I guess the purpose is just to make you smile, and that’s purpose enough for me.
In other news, I’m officially a columnist! Woohoo! My column, Savoring Seoul, is all set up and ready to go at Honest Cooking. My second article should be posted later today, and I’ll have regular features every month about Korean cafes, food and drink, and maybe even recipes. Stay tuned, y’all.
