BUNGEOPPANG

The season for enjoying bungeoppang (붕어빵) is almost over, but it’s still just cool enough to enjoy these waffle-y, bean-filled, fish-shaped treats. Bungeoppang is probably my favorite Korean street food, and I love it even more after a friend told me a really charming factoid about it.

There’s an expression in Korean that’s similar to “made from the same mold” or “cut from the same cloth.” If two people look or act very similarly, you can say they are “bungeoppang” (in reference to the way the fish are all made in the same iron and look identical). Something about that just strikes me as super cute, and I can’t wait to use it. Idioms are fun, y’all.
